AI's Growing Influence in Finance: Customer Adoption Outpaces Advisor Usage in Hong Kong

A recent study by McKinsey & Company has illuminated a notable divergence in the financial landscape of Hong Kong: a substantial portion of consumers are actively embracing artificial intelligence for their financial product decisions, yet a significant number of financial advisors lag in their adoption of these digital tools. This trend signals a critical need for financial institutions to bridge this technology gap, focusing on integrated AI solutions and enhancing human advisory skills to meet evolving customer expectations.

Customers Embrace AI, Advisors Hesitate in Hong Kong's Financial Sector

In a dynamic shift observed in Hong Kong's financial services industry, a recent report from McKinsey & Company, published on September 10, 2026, revealed that 50% of customers now utilize artificial intelligence in their financial purchasing journey. This embrace of AI extends to various stages, with 35% using it to identify potential financial needs, 34% for product research and comparison, and 30% for final purchasing decisions. Customers reported preferring AI for its consistent, objective comparisons (58%) and superior knowledge (53%), as well as its less sales-driven approach (39%) and ability to connect personal circumstances to financial products (37%).

Conversely, the study highlighted a concerning trend among financial advisors in Hong Kong: half of them use AI less than once a week or not at all. This creates a significant gap between customer reliance on AI and advisor adoption. Arthur Shek, Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company's Hong Kong office, emphasized that AI isn't eliminating the need for human advice but rather elevating the standards it must meet. He underscored the potential divide forming between advisors who integrate AI into their practice and those who do not.

Despite the rise of AI, human advisors remain pivotal for approximately 80% of customers when making substantial life, health, and wealth product decisions. Customers value human advisors for their understanding of personal and family situations (43%), guidance in avoiding costly errors (41%), real-time answers to complex inquiries (35%), and accountability post-purchase (34%). The adoption of AI by advisors also varies significantly by client segment: 34% among mass-market advisors, 58% for affluent clients, and 69% for high-net-worth individuals. The primary obstacle to broader AI adoption among advisors isn't resistance, but rather the scarcity of suitable and seamlessly integrated AI tools, as noted by Jackey Yu, Partner and Leader of Asia Customer Experience and AI Transformation at McKinsey & Company. Financial institutions are urged to develop practical, high-impact AI applications, coupled with robust advisor training and a focus on human skills such as empathy, trust-building, and guiding clients through challenging decisions, according to Raymond Woo, Partner and Leader of Asia Financial Services Sales and Distribution at McKinsey & Company.

This evolving landscape underscores a fundamental truth: while AI offers unparalleled efficiency and analytical power, human connection, empathy, and judgment remain irreplaceable in the nuanced realm of financial advising. The future success of financial services hinges on effectively harmonizing advanced AI capabilities with the invaluable qualities of human expertise. By investing in integrated AI tools and comprehensive training that empowers advisors, institutions can create a synergistic model where technology enhances, rather than replaces, the trusted advisor-client relationship. This integration will not only meet the immediate demands of digitally-savvy customers but also fortify the sector against future disruptions, ensuring a more professional and productive advisory environment.
